Like many great basement bars, it earned a nickname in the 70s – The Snakepit. Back then it was the haunt of Melbourne’s roughest characters, and locals called it The Flying Jug for reasons best left to legend. Through the 90s and early 2000s, the George Public Bar became a full-throttle nightclub. Lines down the street. Dancefloor chaos. If you were 18–25 in that era, chances are you’ve got a Snakepit story you probably shouldn’t tell in front of your kids.
