Julian James

Award-winning Melbourne musician Julian James has taken the iconic Muddy Waters classic Catfish Blues and given it a fresh, upbeat Americana twist. Reimagining the track simply as Catfish, this new rendition offers a dynamic, high-energy spin on the 1950s Delta blues standard.

Set for release on Friday, October 11, 2024, across all digital platforms, Catfish was produced by ARIA Award-winning Matt Fell and features the legendary Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica. The track also includes backing vocals from the Hussy Hicks and bass by Fell himself. With its innovative reworking and vibrant new energy, Catfish breathes fresh life into this beloved blues classic.

“I’ve always loved Catfish Blues,” says Julian. “It’s one of my favorite Muddy Waters songs. I wanted to put my own spin on it and infuse it with my own energy. Having Charlie Musselwhite play on the track is a dream come true for me, especially since he’s played with Muddy Waters himself.”

Julian James has been a fixture of Melbourne’s live music scene for years, releasing four critically acclaimed albums. In 2020, he was awarded the Chain Award for Emerging Blues Artist of the Year at the Australian Blues Festival. Known for his high-energy, whiskey-drenched Americana and Hill Country blues, Julian’s performances—whether with his band, The Moonshine State, or as a solo artist—never fail to captivate.

This time, Julian hits the road in duo mode, joined by his immensely talented wife, Beci Kate, who adds percussion and backing vocals to the mix. Together, they’re ready to take Catfish and Julian’s distinctive sound on the road for fans to experience firsthand.
